The Banksy ‘Simpsons’ opener is being met with mixed reactions this week after the extended sequence hit the airwaves Sunday night. Did the show go too far with the biting credit sequence? Watch the video here, and see photos and video below.

While providing some of the best underhanded satire in the biz for the last two decades, The Simpsons has certainly taken a few hits from critics. This time, it appears they struck back in a major way following reports that they may be outsourcing their animation to South Korea.

So what’s a witty animated series to do? Well, hire a graffiti artist to direct an opening sequence mocking the whole thing.

The Banksy ‘Simpsons’ opener did just that. The episode begins with what appears to be the typical opening animation complete with Bart skateboarding, and Homer’s notorious mishandling of a nuclear rod. In between, though, are prominent ‘Banksy’ tags strewn about Springfield.

But as the family makes it to the couch, and fans sit waiting for the unique surprise provided at the beginning of every show, it takes a decidedly darker turn.

The family sits for an awkward moment, then suddenly the living room scene becomes the flickering image of a television screen in an Asian sweat shop.

Glum workers sit under the watchful eye of an overseer, sketching away at Simpson’s animation cells. The cells are dipped into radioactive barrels of sludge before hanging to dry. From there, the sequence makes its way down a rickety ladder, where the more disturbing images begin.

The tongues of severed dolphin heads being used seal boxes, a starving unicorn’s horn made to poke the center holes of DVDs, and even a Panda being used as a beast of burden are thrown in. Let’s not forget the kittens being tossed into what looks like a tree branch grinder—all so that Simpson’s dolls can be properly stuffed.

I thought the Banksy ‘Simpsons’ opener was dark, yet clever. What about you?
